A Love Story Like No Other: Patrick and Ponyboy

Last February, as the windchill dropped to 30 degrees below zero, a brown-and-white tabby cat was seen wandering in search of food. He was dangerously thin, cold, and running out of time. A compassionate Angel’s Wish volunteer quickly set a live trap, and within hours, he was safe.

We named him Pony Boy.

As he began his recovery—warm, fed, and finally safe—another cat named Patrick was on his own journey of healing. Patrick had come from a Wisconsin hoarding situation involving more than 100 cats. Many of them had never known life outside overcrowding and neglect.

Patrick was among the shyest. His fur was greasy and yellow-tinged. He hid from visitors, unsure that humans could ever be safe.

But everything changed when Patrick met Pony Boy.

When Pony Boy felt nervous, he retreated into a little carrier for comfort. And every time, Patrick squeezed right in beside him. Two frightened cats found safety in each other. Volunteers started calling them “P2.”

Together, they began to explore, play, and finally trust people. Their bond was deep, sweet, and unmistakable.

Months later, Sue arrived at Angel’s Wish looking for companionship after the heartbreaking loss of her beloved Labrador. She wasn’t sure if cats could fill the void — until she saw two cats online.

She wrote to us later:

“I had always heard how wonderfully Angel’s Wish treated their adoptable animals. But there were these two cats dressed up in tuxedos and ties who had to be adopted together since they had fallen in love with each other.”

Even meeting them was an adventure. Another couple was already in line for them. Someone else was already in the room visiting them. But eventually, the moment was right.

Pony Boy rushed over purring, irresistible and sweet. Patrick hid under a chair, only emerging to tuck himself under Sue’s own seat. Sue didn’t mind — she understood.

She decided to take a chance on them both.

What happened next is pure magic.

Sue writes:

“So this is a love story like no other. I have so many laughs and sweet smiley eyes and faces like only a cat can make when they are experiencing kitty nirvana.”

“They tear around the house on all floors, talk to each other in loving tones, and groom each other endlessly.”

“Patrick has learned to love being petted and caressed into oblivion and Peter (fka Pony Boy)… well, he definitely gets his share of fuzzy belly rubs and chin rubs.”

Today, Patrick and Peter are safe, joyful, and deeply loved.

Sue ends her letter with words we treasure:

“Thank you Angel’s Wish for all your efforts. You all are wonderful and our kitties are forever grateful for saving them.”

This is the heart of Angel’s Wish. Your support creates these stories. These recoveries. These friendships. These happy endings.

On this Giving Tuesday, we invite you to help more cats like Patrick and Peter find warmth, healing, and a home where they are treasured.

Your kindness creates second chances — and sometimes even best friends.
